The cabinet is titled Mature for Her Age, an ode to the phrase many kids are told as an intended complement without pause for the countless reasons those kids may behave older than their age. Maturity and expectations associated with age is such an interesting concept. The cabinet presents as a “sophisticated” piece of fine furniture an adult would display in their home but the storage space inside is occupied by a children’s toy. It’s got the contrast of hand cut dovetails and claro walnut doors to drawer pulls covered with paint finger prints and a functioning Lite Brite panel.
This piece was born of many thoughts I have about the childhood experience and how it relates and evolves into adulthood. The things we each seek, avoid, cherish, or dread as a result of moments lived decades before. Watching people’s reactions when opening this cabinet has been a joy and unexpected insight into what a simple toy captured in a “grown up” facade stirs up in people. I’ll try to articulate more on that some day.
Mature For Her Age is a piece of fine furniture that houses a space for play. The casework is dovetailed and made with bookmatched, figured walnut veneer to present a sophisticated object a mature “adult” would proudly display in their home. When the doors are open, it reveals more beautiful wood grain and a row of dovetailed drawers stained with colorful fingerprints that take the user a step away from adult sophistication and toward untroubled amusement. With the flip of a switch, the light illuminates a pixelated picture made of colorful pegs familiar to those who grew up 1970s-1990s. With or without challenging childhood experiences, the balance and contrast between youth and adulthood is something we all experience and this adaptation of a Lite Brite is intended to honor the value of joy and play in all chapters of life.
